🌿 What are essential oils – and what are hydrosols?
Essential oils are the highly concentrated, fat-soluble aromatic and active ingredients of a plant. They are used in aromatherapy, for fragrance blends, natural cosmetics, and in the household.
Hydrosols (plant waters) are the mild, water-soluble counterpart. They are always produced during distillation and are ideal for facial toners, baby care products, sauna infusions, bath additives, room sprays, fabric softeners, cocktails, and much more.

You can use a wide variety of plants to make your own essential oils and hydrosols – from your garden, balcony, forest or organic shop:

⚗️ Making your own essential oils – step by step
The DiFUMA distillation system uses gentle steam distillation . This allows you to distill essential oils and hydrosols at home – using your kitchen appliance:
- Prepare the plant material and roughly chop it.
- Fill the mixing bowl of your food processor with water.
- Set up and close the DiFUMA distillation system correctly.
- Start the device depending on the model (e.g. Thermomix®, Monsieur Cuisine®, Bosch Cookit®).
- In the oil separator, the essential oil separates from the hydrosol .
- Fill hydrosol into clean spray or dropper bottles, store essential oil in dark glass bottles.
